Return after an active career
Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rouwen Hennings will part ways at the end of the season. The veteran’s expiring contract will not be extended, as the second division club announced on Friday. The 35-year-old striker, who is Fortuna’s top scorer in the top two divisions with 72 goals, will continue his playing career at another club before returning after retirement. Hennings will then take a place in the youth academy coaching staff. This has already been contractually agreed.
Hennings at the top: Fortuna’s top scorers in the 1st and 2nd leagues
« Rouwen won the hearts of the fans and did a great job for Fortuna. Not renewing his contract was not easy for us, but we have to set the sporting course for the future. It was particularly important for us to « having a role model like Rouwen Hennings among us after continuing her career. We are already looking forward to working together, » said Klaus Allofs, Board Member for Sport and Communications.
Hennings, who has registered six goals and three assists in 27 games this season, explained: « It was my wish to continue playing for Fortuna and to finish my career here. Unfortunately, that is no longer possible for me now. « I still feel quite strong and now I want to prove it elsewhere. I’m proud to look back on a great time in Dusseldorf and I would like to thank all the fans who showed me their great affection and supported me. Fortuna means a lot for me, so I’m happy to have the opportunity to come back here later.” In total, Hennings has worn the F95 shirt 227 times so far, scoring 84 goals.
