Feyenoord Rotterdam secured a good starting position to reach the Europa League semi-finals. The Dutch leaders celebrated their 1-0 victory (0-0) against AS Roma on Thursday in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Mats Wieffer scored the decisive goal with a spectacular volley (53rd). The Dutch managed to get revenge for the Conference League final they lost last year, in which the Italians finished 1-0.
Manchester United later missed out on a victory in the Europa League quarter-final first leg despite two goals from Marcel Sabitzer, on loan from FC Bayern. The 29-year-old, who moved to Manchester in January, scored the game’s first two goals (14th and 21st minute) in a 2-2 (2-0) win against record winners Sevilla. Jesús Navas (84′) and Youssef En-Nesyri (90′ + 2′) equalized late, the second leg in Spain will start next Thursday.
Juventus, the Italian record champions, won 1-0 (0-0) against Sporting Lisbon. Just before the break, Juve had to deal with the replacement of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who left the field visibly injured. The 32-year-old previously defused several chances for the guests.
