U19 Coach

According to information from “Bild”, VfL Bochum has decided on a temporary solution until the end of the season after the separation of coach Thomas Letsch and the rejection of Peter Stöger. Former U19 coach Heiko Butscher will therefore be responsible for the remaining six matches and will lead training this Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. He will be supported by assistant coaches Markus Gellhaus and Frank Heinemann. Butscher previously contributed as interim coach of the pros in 2018, 2019 and most recently in 2022.

On Monday, the Ruhr Bundesliga club, threatened with relegation, announced the departure of coach Letsch. There has been a worrying negative trend at VfL recently – although the club already seemed saved after a 3-2 victory against FC Bayern Munich on matchday 22. By mid-February, the lead on the relegation place was a comfortable nine points; Bochum was closer to the international ranks than to the 2nd Bundesliga. However, a run with just one point in six games meant concerns were growing week by week.

VfL is currently three points ahead of 16th place and four points in a direct relegation zone. The next opponent on Saturday will be 1. FC Heidenheim, who also beat FC Bayern Munich last weekend. Most recently, Stöger, who currently works as sports director at Admira Wacker, rejected the Bochum team. “You called me last night,” he said Monday evening during the “Today” conference. “It was a great conversation. It would also have been very interesting and exciting for me. I considered taking this position to put myself back in the conversation. But short-term nature ultimately ruled against this decision. Also because of the contractual situation at Admira.

Former national under-21 coach Stefan Kuntz was also considered a candidate to succeed Letsch. The 61-year-old played for VfL from 1983 to 1986 and 1998/99. From 2006 to 2008 he managed the Revierklub and most recently served as Turkey’s national coach.

Letsch, dismissed, took over VfL in September 2022 in last place in the standings. The 55-year-old managed to stay in the league with Bochum last season and was subsequently celebrated at the Ruhr Stadium.

I see it that way too. This summer, we need reinforcements in midfield, both in terms of the squad and the forward squad. Kerber would be a very interesting candidate who could be recruited without hesitation. I think the idea that 10-12 million Uzun would be enough to build a team capable of competing for promotion is absurd. If we use the money sustainably and don’t immediately waste it on a few individual players, the club will get more out of it. Furthermore, given our level of debt, we cannot assume that there will be too much of this income left for transfers anyway. And what do you get for 5-6 million if reinforcements are needed in every part of the team? If we had a good core group that could move to the next level with 2 or 3 targeted transfers, that would be fine with me. But unfortunately, we are far from that.

It is certain that Jean-Louis Gasset will not remain on the bench. OM beyond this 2023-2024 financial year. Already in a state of grace, with the start of his mandate marked by five victories in a row, the person concerned recalled that his contract would run for 100 days, and not one more. A stopgap measure to clean the furniture in a season of compromise, before putting the carts back this summer.

Since the last offseason, two names have been regularly mentioned behind the scenes of the Marseille club: those of Christophe Galtier and Paulo Fonseca. Pablo Longoria greatly appreciates the first name, who nevertheless has the disadvantage of being under contract until 2025 with the Qataris of Al-Duhail – not to mention his Parisian past which is prohibitive for many in Marseille.

A mutual temptation

The second is just a pass, and it’s free to commit to 1^he July if he does not extend his Lille lease by then. According to La Provence, OM’s interest in Paulo Fonseca is reciprocal; The intention is to have a big one besides and the last one when the Olympic management will be at the information place. Convincing in Lille for two years, the former coach of AS Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk could nevertheless turn to England if the opportunity arises.

This Thursday at a press conference, on the eve of OM being hosted by Losc, the Portuguese technician spoke about his future: “ I’m totally focused on the last matches of the season and on this day it’s just to finish in the best way possible. My future needs me to prepare for it and dedicate time to it, it’s not important. […] We’ll see but I think the end of the season will be important for my future. »
